The prototypes were committed to this endeavor in three developmental forms as the Me 264 V1, Me 264 V2 and the Me 264 V3. After a protracted construction period, the Me 264 V1 achieved first flight on December 23rd, 1942, with 4 x Jumo 211J series liquid-cooled inline piston engines of 1,340 horsepower each and was built sans armor or weapons.
Loring AFB was built in the 1950's to accommodate 100 B-36 bombers. Consequently, its ramps, parking areas, weapons storage, and fuel storage capacities all far exceed later requirements. Its overall capacity ranked second among all 21 SAC bases.

One of the variants of the Boeing B-47 Stratojet is the XB-47. This was a two-prototype and was built as 450-2-2 and 450-1-1 powered by 6 Allison turbojet engines. Another version is called B-47A. These first ten designs were delivered in 1950, and its configuration was close to the original XB-47 models.
The B-1A was initially developed in the 1970s as a replacement for the B-52 Stratofortress, and built by Rockwell International (now Boeing). Four prototypes of this long-range, high speed (Mach 2.2) strategic bomber were developed and tested in the mid-1970s, but the program was canceled in 1977 before going into production.
In 1952 Washington and the nation were reminded that dangers are always present during military service. Fairchild Air Force Base had four Convair B-36 crashes. The deadliest came on April 15, 1952, killing 15 of the 17 men on board. Fairchild transitioned from the Convair B-36 to the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress heavy bomber in 1956.
When production ceased, a total of 382 B-36 Peacemakers had been built, plus one XC-99 and two YB-60, for a total of 385 aircraft of all variants. Four B-36 were selected for preservation, along with the cargo version of the B-36, the XC-99.
