I had exactly the same issue when i had my vrs tdi. DPF light on followed by the glow plug light. It was an exhaust temp sensor but as mentioned above there is 3 so very difficult to trace which sensor is at fault. Any fault in the system will result in the DPF needing a forced regen as the car won't do one.
